Brownlee Estate & Brownlee House
Ownership

Bowmanhurst is a property in East Brownlee on Mauldslie Road, neighbouring Brownlee House. It is situated between Mauldslie Road and The River Clyde, where the Clyde takes an upside down “U” bend at Dalserf.

Brownlee House has a small chapel. The Harvie’s owned the Brownlee lands.

According to Lindsay Brownlee’s reference to Brownlee House, in 1960 he met the then owner, Mrs Harvie. Her family had owned the property for more than 150 years. Mrs Harvie stated that she was a direct descendant of Thomas Robertson, surgeon Admiral, Royal Navy, to Lord Nelson, whose wife was Elizabeth Harvie, daughter of John Harvie (see family chart reference below). We know from the reference below that the lands of Brownlee and Bomanhurst were in the posession of James Harvie, oldest son of John Harvie and that later the Reverend William Harvie succeeded to “Brownlee” (year unknown). Mrs Harvie stated that the property was entailed through her female family line. It may be that she inherited the property through Elizabeth Robertson, nee Harvie, who would be either her grandmother or great grandmother.
